Gluten Free vs Coeliac

Recently, it seems to have become a trend where more and more people are becoming gluten-free. This is different to someone who has Coeliac disease as with this disease a person cannot have gluten in their diet, meanwhile in a gluten free diet, people choose to be that way. In healthy people, the inside of the small intestine is lined with finger-like projections called villi that help the body absorb nutrients. In people with celiac disease, gluten irritates the lining of the small intestine and also causes the immune system to attack the villi. Over time, the villi can be damaged or destroyed

What is gluten you may ask? Gluten is a mixture of two proteins present in cereal grains, especially wheat, which is responsible of the elastic texture of dough. These days, a gluten-free lifestyle has become one of the most popular diet trends in the U.S. One in five people now reduce or eliminate gluten.

People suffering from Crohn’s disease and those with lupus are told to stay away from gluten because of the increased risk of inflammation in the joints as well as, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. Gluten free has now become part of a healthy lifestyle. Gluten free, along with cutting carbohydrates, and eating more vegetables and fruit, help some people lose weight.
